Can anyone explain the differenses between those two scalers? If you exclude the mediaplayer capability of the VPS3800 what advantages do it have over the VP30?
I also wonder what pricetag the VPS3800 will have once it gets out?

There are many advantages with the VPS3800. The main advantage is that it de-interlaces 1080i where the VP does not. You should read the features of the product and compare it to the features of the VP30. The VP30 is nice hardware but is only a glorified HD+ unit with HDMI inputs. The VPS3800 is atleast one generation ahead of the VP30.
Also, the list price is $5500.

I think you cannot compare those two scalers.
The VP30 is a very good next gen entry level scaler at a very good price.
The 3800 is a real high end HD and SD perfect scaler processor with media center and that can be upgraded in many ways.
You could compare the VP30 with the VPS2300. It is likely that the vps2300 overperforms the vp30.

I have had the VP30 for about 2 months how (loaned)
I'm very disapointed in it's performance , lots of combing , poor setup
and worst of all, I can't use 1080P 72 & 75 Hz (which the HD+ did)
The 2300 outperforms the VP30 in all aspects.

Woaw that is bad news !
The HD+ was quite a good scaler, would you say that the VP30 is not as good. Could it be because of first firmware release ? I feel disapointed, I had good thoughts about DVDO products ... now I might think diferently.
I have a VPS2300 and I really believe that with its current price it is the best scaler around.

for everyone that is using a scaler for BOTH N T S C and P A L sources,
most if not all US products do a good job for NTSC but disapoint in PAL
performance. and even worse if you have mixed content (film/video/computer)
or transcoded materials. as of now, my loaned VP30 combs badly and it's a
pain to setup different resolutions. it looks to me, that their scaler is more
designed for digital connections and displays rather than for analog connections
as I said before, the VP30 won't do 1080P 72/75 Hz. I guess they took it
out because DVI/HDMI won't do it either.
the Crystalio line seems to be caring to the 'vintage video' croud as well
as to the new digital technology.
I had most previous scalers for testing over the years and the VP2300
was by far the best scaler I ever had. the only complaint I ever heard from
it was that it's too sharp

Sorry but you can't compare the two. The VP30 is not even next gen tech; it is, maybe, a tweak on existing (old) technology. The CII uses one of the next gen chips for DI and scaling (VXP). I'm sure the gurus here will tell you more. MSRP for 3800 is $5500 if I'm not mistaken. Just read up a bit here and on AVS; there is a ton of discussion if you want to educate yourself.

The CII has nothing but advantages over the VP30 in its current form:
- many many many more features
- much better SD video deinterlacing
- much better HD film deinterlacing
- much much better HD video deinterlacing
- better overall PAL support
However, there's a rumour that the VP30 will get an update option sooner or later, which exchanges the currently used and outdated SIL504 deinterlacing chip with a brand new one (currently under development). As a result the CII will still have many many many more features. Eventually the updated VP30 will have more or less similiar deinterlacing capabilities compared to the CII, but better anime support. The VP30 update is nothing but a rumour right now, though, so take it with a very big pinch of salt.

Yeah, yeah, yeah!!!!:D
One thing that disapoints me though, is that we are talking about a released product (DVDO) and one that only our imagination and the announced specs are taken in account.:(
I am a bit tired of waiting of a product that it should had been launched in November then in Crhistmass, after before end of January, now in end of February.....and god who knows when!!!!:(
I contacted the local distributor to get some inner-info when it will be released and he proposed me to wait a little bit more. But how much "a bit" is measured? In days, weeks or months?
I could swear though that he didnt knew anything for the releasing date. And we are talking about their dealer!!!!
And I have to be a little more cynical here...
Buying a product that its first update which is so crucial is programmed before its official launch doesnt seem ok to me.
Update the s/w first and release it afterwards.

If you dont like it then dont buy it when it comes out!
The VP30 doesnt have all the functions they promised either. They keep saying the later releases will have it.
I am patiently waiting for the release of the 3800.

Do you notice that you kind of contradict yourself? If they update the software first, you need to wait longer. If you don't want to wait any longer, than you shouldn't ask them to do the software update first. You can't have both at the same time, unless PixelMagic employs Simon the Sorcerer.

I am/was a strong supporter of PMS Crystalio 2300 as I have seen doing kind of small miracles after the tweaks of a professional calibrator.
But....
this my opinion about their product performance has nothing to do with announced marketing tricks. I wish PMS release dates kept as announced. Now if somebody doesnt care of waiting for a specific day and then after to put in the circle another one, thats ok for me. But I do care!
If PMS couldnt keep these releasing days firm, should have been given to public.
It prooves that it is lacking of serious marketing except if they think that they can hold the consumers waiting from September 05 till the next year with promises.:(
I am hoping someone from the companys marketing is listening, taking in account that I have only good words to spread for your products...only!
And where are the beta tester reviews?
Something I asked from my very first messages?
I know Henry has a piece, so are we are going to hear some deep details, my dear friend? You know that I trust your opinion very much.:)
Unfortunatelly the local dealer doesnt have a unit and he doesnt know anything except the specs by heart:D

I agree with you on your point but if you look at the rest of the industry, you can see that they have all pushed back their products too (i.e. Vantage HD, Dragonfly...) Even DVDO was over a month late sending out its VP30. So taking your point in consideration, it would mean that all these companies have a serious marketing problem.

Look on the bright side, the KISS 600 'multi media' player had a press release in Jan 2004, and the last date I saw for delivery was may 2006 and I don't believe that one!! We are all frustrated but it has only been a few months.

Hey Nic...we had to wait a while for your first post too ;)
We all hate waiting for things...I've been after a Roku Soundbridge Radio since before Xmas and now it's due to be released on the 26th of this months...which is a Sunday
BTW I've been told that the CII should be here very soon now :D
Cheers, Lee

As we all know 'very soon' can be anywhere from a couple of days to over a few months.
Manufacturers should use the 3DRealms Duke Nukem Forever saying: "When it is done". That game has been delayed for close to 8 years now. :)

I'll have to say a few words for VP30 after the previous comments.
I've been very happy with my VP30. I don't have any large issues with the new 1.03 beta software. Deinterlace performance is quite similar to HD+ (though I haven't yet run through my HQV Benchmark dvd), no combing and good results with both PAL and NTSC material. Yes, video based material gives some jaggies, but this is the case with every SiI504 based device. User interface is very simple to use, just like previous DVDO models. But as you can see from the avsforum thread, people are experiencing quite a few bugs, so this product isn't yet quite 'ready'.
