View Full Version : VXP - Mixed 3:2 with Titles processing

Sorry to bother you again.

Unfortunately, I have found another performance shortage of HQV(DPX-1300)
for "Mixed 3:2 with Titles" processing.

Details are here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=664769

Althohgh, HQV claims that
-----------
HQV algorithms make a film vs. video decision on a per-pixel basis. This is useful, for example, for deinterlacing film that has a video-based text 'crawl' superimposed on top of it (film credits, storm advisories on TV, etc). The film portion is de-interlaced with cadence detection, and the video portion is deinterlaced through motion interpolation.
-----------

My test results tells me something different.

My eyes tells me that they just "bob" the whole frame when titles are running.

For reference, you can see the picture below.
none.jpg - The shape of guitar cords - this is correct image from 3:2 pull down except for running titles.
bob.jpg - This is the same as DPX-1300 image.

Jason,
Could clarify that VXP do different processing from "bob".
And if so, could explain how it is done.

Very funny thing happened.
In the above discussion thread, someone seems to be from DVxx posted picture claiming that it is well-processed "3:2 film with titles".

But, that picture cropped out crawling(running) titles with some PhotoShop-like tools.

In the processing of "3:2 film with titles", the most important thing is how clear the running title is. <- Isn't it the purpose of this algorithm.

But he cropped out titles, what does it mean?
It means that the running titles shows comb(saw teeth), so he cropped out.
In others words, he faked the picture image from the scene of MPEG decoder with "none" deinterlacing option.
I recommend you to go to that thread(link in the above post) and check it with your eyes.

It seems that, currenlty, there is no VP in market (including HQV and new VP30) which do pixel based "3:2 film with titles" processing.

CrystallioII will be the first VP which really do this jobs.

Cheers,

Corrections to DPX-1300 HQV "Mixed 3:2 with Titles" processing

Corrections:
DPX-1300 HQV seems to do good pixel based processing for "Mixed 3:2 with Titles".
My decision in previous link was mistake.

Reason to come to mistake:
Today, I compared the HQV "Film Detail Tests" with my Samsung DVDP.
(fast running Speed Car with empty stand)
Both seem to do well for this test.
But the still scene from the DPX-1300 always looks like "bob".
althogh the still scene from Samsung DVDP always shows very clean scene.

So, I got a question that maybe HQV's running scene is alright but only the still scene
may have problem.

So, I tested again "Mixed 3:2 with Titles".
Carefully watched Quitar codes from running scene and and compared it with "none" option from Elecard.
Althogh every still scene showed "bob-like", the whole running scene looks like doing correct 3:2 reverse pull down.

So what:
I am happy because I am wrong, because my DPX-1300 is getting better.

Mistery:
Why HQV did not show clean still scene like Samsung DVDP?

EDIT:
Still scene performance is also important performance measure,
since we often pause to see the details of scene.
In this sense, HQV is broken.
I hope VXP not to be.
