Just to make sure, you created an NFS server in the Mediabox / Setup / IP settings using the /j sharename and the IP address of your Vista PC? I use the latest f/w, not sure if that makes a difference. |

I tend to agree but it has been working well for me. Back to the original question. Will it work in winxp x64? |

Yes, I created the reference to the server on the mediabox as "/j" just as I had done with SFU on XP. I don't think it's a problem with the MB200 interacting with Vista/NFS - I think it's more that ProNFS doesn't seem to be working properly for me on Vista. I don't see the export when I try a showmount on a UNIX box. |

OK. If anyone's interested, the problem was ZoneAlarm Security Suite. I thought that this was configured fine but I'd been having trouble with SlimServer as well. Once ZoneAlarm was uninstalled, both SlimServer and ProNFS worked fine. ZoneAlarm claims to be Vista compatible but it looks like there are a few problems with it based on some of the discussions on the web.

NFS share name problem
I recently bought a Qnap TS-109 Pro NAS server with NFS support. NFS works fine with my Mediabox 100, as long as I place my media files in a folder on the internal hard drive in the Qnap.
I can't find a way to connect my Mediabox with any external devices connected to the NAS. The Qnap maps external devices to predefined share names like "eSATA Disk 1" and "USB Disk 1" and can't find a way to change these share names. Is is possible to enter these names on the Mediabox, including the empty spaces? Apart from this slight inconvenience (or lack of knowledge on my part), the Qnap works admirably. I get a sustained speed of over 10 MB/s in a 10/100 LAN using Samba (copying a 40 GB directory takes around 1 hour). UPnP also runs smoothly (TwonkyVision 4.3). |

How do I know if NFS is running, what's the service name? I don't see the option to share as NFS in folder properties, just normal sharing???

Hi,
I would have thought a lot longer about buying a media streamer if I knew it was going to take me this far into networking. Thanks for the walk through guide, but is it possibe the download and set uo routine has altered since it was written? In 'Custom Installation' I could not find the opt outs, and ended up with 163Mb of stuff installed. Also when W S for Unix was running it could see nothing in 'Local lan' or 'favourite lan'. My other pc, hard wire linked to the modem router was available, or rather the discs I had opted to share over the network, but not the media streamer, which is definitely connected, by hard wire to the modem router. It can be seen in the 'list pc's attached' screen of the m/r's admin pages, with the correct MAC address. Anyway 'kava.exe' crept in when I was doing all this, and after losing the ability to click on the 'C' drive in 'My Computer' (you are asked what program to use to 'Open' the C drive. So I uninstalled it, ran SpyBot, AVG Anti Spyware and Flash Disinfector to get back to a running pc. Willing to try installing again if I committed an idiot beginners error. |

nfs on NAS
Hi
Thanks for the help on NFS in Windows. So I got the hard drives in the computer working with NFS. Now, how do I get NFS working on my NAS? I have a d-link DNS-323 (supposedly no support for NFS) and the HD material are running slow with samba. I heard it's possible to run a NFS script on DNS-323. Does anyone know how that is done? If someone knows how and has a short manual for how it's done since I'm very basic with computers. Best Reg |

Password & Group Zip File
When i unzip the passwordgroup zip file I only have 1 file not two seperate ones.
I've downloaded several times but it's the same every time. So when I come to this section, it doesn't work Start "Services for Unix Administration" - select "User Name Mapping" - under "Configuration", select "Use Password and Group files" - unzip the attached "passwd" and "group" files in this post to your PC such as under C:\ - click "Browse..." and select the "passwd" file for "Password file path and name:", and "group" file for "Group file path and name:" - click the upper right "Apply" button Any help greatly appreciated |

I tried to download it again and it now contains only 1 file instead of 2. I can email you the the 2 files if you like.

Unpack the downloaded file and rename the unpacked file to the extension .zip - then unpack again and you have the two required files. Or use the files attached ![]() |

My experiances with NFS from M$:
It works flawlessly, even after several installs (which is not always the case with M$ software). There were two issues I had to overcome: - Share name. The name entered in the NFS tab from sharing must be prefixed by a "/" when linking the share in MB. (Not a problem) - NTFS Permissions. When using NTFS, there are file and folder permissions to be set additional to the share permissions! If this is not done, the share can be opened in the MB, but apperars to be empty, or files are listed but cannot be played. All this behaviour is related to NTFS file and folder permissions. If using the Guest account (as directed by the tutorial), a Guest must have permisson to list the directory and open the files read only at least! So set the permissions accordingly. (Be absolutely sure about that, before looking any further) Good luck! |
